Rewrite Policy
Because
revising is an excellent way of improving one’s writing, I will be allowing
optional rewrites for Essay #1. More
than merely “correcting” the essays or “fixing” my comments, these revisions
must not only apply my feedback but go beyond that to improve the paper
overall.
Requirements
Conference: In order to
eligible for a rewrite, students must set an individual appointment with me to
discuss their paper and revision strategies.
Writing Center Consultation: As part of the
revision process, you must set an appointment with a writing center
consultant. This consultation can occur
either before your revisions to work through my comments or after your
revisions to discuss how revisions addressed the comments. After your consultation,
you will receive a consultant session record.
You must turn a copy of this document in with the revision packet. Writing centers are located in Simpkins Hall
and locations in the residence halls and Malpass
Library. To set an
appointment, 298-2815.
Rewrite: Revisions should address all marginal comments made on the original – not only locally where I noted the issue but any place throughout the paper where that comment may apply. I typically do not mark every instance of an error or comment. Suggestions and issues noted in the end comments should, of course, be applied throughout the paper. Revisions should also extend beyond my comments to improve other elements of the paper as well
Revision Memo: Each revision
must be accompanied by a 1-2 page, typed, single-spaced
revision memo. This memo should
specifically discuss all changes made to the revision (and account for any
changes not made). I do not mean detail
ever corrected punctuation but if you fixed your semi-colon usage throughout you
would mention it. This memo should also
point out revisions you made which were NOT noted in my comments but which
improved the paper. Finally, it should
discuss why specifically the revision is superior to the original. If this memo does not contain sufficient
detail or discussion, I will return the revision packet to the student for
re-submission.
Depending
on the quality and comprehensiveness of the revision and the revision memo, students may
earn up to 15% to their original grade.
Failure to comply with any of these requirements will result in no
additional points being awarded.
Due Date:
Students must turn in a clean copy of their
revised paper AND the original version bearing my comments by December 7th. LATE
revisions will not be accepted.
